FAQ – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
At Valley Pet Surgery +, we do our best to make sure we provide you with as much information as possible both on our site and in person. We want to make sure that you know and understand the information about the care your animal is receiving.
Below are some of the most common questions we get. If you haven’t found an answer on our site and can’t find it here, please give us a call or email.
Should I spay or neuter my pet? Why?
There are significant benefits to spaying or neutering your pet as follows:
- Spaying is important for your pet’s health, behavior, and the community.  Spaying your dog or cat significantly decreases chances of mammary cancer. It also prevents pyometra (severe uterine infection requiring emergency surgery).
- Neutering your pet lowers the chance of testicular cancer and prostate disease. In addition, it may help decrease aggression and tendency to roam.
- Additionally, spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters. Â This reduces pet homelessness and overcrowded animal shelters.
Why are you more affordable than my regular veterinarian?
Our clinic is designed around efficiency and focus. We provide a limited set of services—surgery, dental cleanings, and vaccines—which allows our team to work in a highly streamlined, consistent way.
By using standardized protocols and minimizing downtime between procedures, we can safely lower the cost per surgery. Because we are not balancing a full schedule of medical appointments, we’re able to focus entirely on these services and pass the savings on to our clients.
Do you cut corners to keep prices down?
No. We do not cut corners—but we do tailor care based on patient risk.
For young, healthy pets, pre-operative bloodwork and IV catheters are not always required. Making these optional helps keep surgery affordable while still allowing owners to choose additional screening or support if they prefer.
- Pre-operative bloodwork
- Required for pets 5 years of age and older
- Optional for pets under 5 years who appear healthy on exam
- Always available at the owner’s request
- IV catheters and fluids
- Required for dental cleanings in pets over 5 years of age
- Required for pregnant dogs
- Strongly recommended for dogs who are overweight, in heat, or over 5 years old
- Available for all patients, regardless of age
Our goal is to balance safety, transparency, and accessibility, while giving owners informed choices
What time is drop-off?
Please bring your pet to our office between 6:15am and 7:30am. No food after 10pm the night before surgery, water is ok. Puppies and kittens less than 6 months of age should have a small snack between 5 and 6am, about a quarter of what you would normally feed them.
What time is pick-up?
You should be able to pick up your pet by 4pm. We will call you if your pet is available earlier than 4pm.
How old should my pet be for surgery?
All privately owned dogs should be at least 4 months old or 4 pounds.
All privately owned cats should be at least 3 months old or 3 pounds.
Do you take large dogs?
Yes! We can take your large dog up to 150lbs.
Will you accept flat-face (brachycephalic) dogs?
