A Smart Investment in Your Cat’s Health
Spaying or neutering your cat helps prevent overpopulation and unwanted litters. There are also several other benefits from spaying your cat including:
- Reduced risk of reproductive cancers. such as testicular cancer
- Reduces the risk for uterine infections, such as pyometra
- Decreases risk for behavioral issues, such as aggression and roaming
Spaying a female cat involves removing the cat’s uterus and ovaries to prevent future pregnancies. Neutering a male cat involves removing his testicles to prevent him from impregnating female cats.
Cost Expectations
All cat spays are $100. All cat neuters are $85. This includes a physical examination, anesthesia, surgery, and pain medications during surgery as well as pre and post-surgery monitoring.
Female cats are required to have an E-collar (cone) or surgery recovery suit after surgery to prevent licking and chewing of the incision. E-collars are an additional $20 (surgery recovery suit $30) unless you bring a properly fitting e-collar or surgery recovery suit with you at the time of pickup. All female cats are also required to have Take Home Pain Meds ($20) to help relieve pain during the post-surgery period.
Additional charges may apply for the following:
- Pregnancy/Enlarged Uterus($25-$50) – Female cats who have abnormalities of the uterus (significant swelling, enlargement, or fragility) or are overweight increase surgical time and anesthesia. In these instances, we administer fluids in recovery to restore blood volume and expedite recovery.
- Cryptorchid (undescended testicle) – ($50-$200) – This condition can lead to health issues, including increased risk of testicular cancer. The treatment typically involves surgical removal of the undescended testicle(s).
Pre-surgery Preparation – Your cat should not have any food after 10pm the night before surgery but water should be available. Cats 4 months or younger can have a small snack (1/4 of their normal meal) the morning of surgery, but all other cats should not eat until the evening of the surgery.
The drop-off time at the clinic the day of surgery is between 6:15am and 7:30am.
Post-surgery Recovery – You will be contacted by us when your cat is ready to be released post-surgery. We typically close at 4:00pm so pick up will be prior to that.
When you take your cat home from surgery, they may be groggy for 12 to 24 hours due to the surgical anesthesia. To help your pet recover as quickly and painlessly as possible at home, we recommend the following:
- After 6pm the evening of surgery, you can offer your pet 1/4 to 1/2 their normal food amount and water.
- For female cats, administer the 3 day supply of take home pain medication as directed.
- Restrict your cat’s activity over the next 10 to 14 days. It is important your cat stay calm and dry over the recuperation period-no running, jumping, swimming, bathing/grooming or licking. Restricting activity with other pets during this time is also recommended.
- Your female cat should wear the e-collar or surgery suit for 10 to 14 days post-surgery to minimize the risk of infection from licking or chewing and to protect the stitches.
- You should check their incision at least twice a day watching for redness and swelling as well as any discharge or bleeding.
- We provide a sheet of Surgery Aftercare Instructions which details additional post-surgery information. If any question or concerns, please reach out to us via phone (480 851 2065) or email (info@valleypetsurgery.com).
